A Gourmet Adventure: Salmon Burgers with Creative Fillings

Sometimes life throws you curveballs and you must adapt.

One such curveball was sent my way.

Having recently been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, I’m trying to find different ways to incorporate nutritious salmon into my diet. I need more healthy protein daily, so I try to eat it 3-4 times per week. But it starts to get boring.

Salmon is highly nutritious and is considered a superfood due to its rich array of nutrients. It is an excellent source of complete protein, which is vital for muscle growth, repair, and overall body function. A 100-gram (3.5-ounce) serving typically contains about 20–25 grams of protein.

One of the best sources of omega-3s (EPA and DHA), which support heart health, reduce inflammation, and improve brain function, wild salmon generally has higher omega-3 levels than farmed salmon. It contains healthy fats that are good for cholesterol management and cardiovascular health.

Salmon is one of the few natural food sources rich in vitamin D, which is essential for bone health, immune function, and mood regulation.

It is a good source of B vitamins, especially B6 (pyridoxine), B12 (cobalamin), and niacin, which are important for energy production, red blood cell formation, and nervous system health.

Salmon provides:

  • Selenium: a powerful antioxidant that helps protect cells from damage and supports thyroid health.

  • Potassium: Important for regulating blood pressure and heart function.

  • Phosphorus: Contributes to strong bones and teeth.

  • Glycemic Index friendly: Salmon contains virtually no carbohydrates, making it ideal for low-carb and ketogenic diets.

  • Low calorie: A 100-gram portion provides about 200 calories, depending on the preparation method and whether the salmon is wild or farmed. Wild salmon is typically leaner and lower in calories than farmed salmon.

Health Benefits

  • Promotes heart health by reducing triglycerides and improving cholesterol levels.

  • Enhances brain health, reducing the risk of cognitive decline and depression.

  • Supports joint and skin health due to its anti-inflammatory properties.

  • Boosts immune function through its rich nutrient profile.

Including salmon in your diet 2–3 times per week can provide these benefits while offering a delicious and versatile protein option.

Salmon burgers are the ultimate combination of healthy eating and indulgence, offering a blank canvas for culinary creativity. Whether you’re hosting a summer barbecue or preparing a quick and healthy weeknight dinner, these protein-packed patties are versatile and endlessly customizable. Today, we’re diving into some mouthwatering salmon burger variations that will elevate your burger game, including a spin with feta and spinach.

Things to Consider

Tips for Perfect Salmon Burgers

  1. Chilling is Key: Letting the patties rest in the fridge prevents them from falling apart during cooking.

  2. Don’t Overcook: Salmon dries out quickly, so cook the patties just until they’re opaque in the center.

  3. Pair with the Right Bun(or not!): Brioche, ciabatta, or potato buns complement the rich salmon flavors beautifully.

Salmon burgers are more than just a healthy alternative to beef burgers; they’re a culinary playground where you can experiment with different textures and flavors. Whether you prefer the tanginess of feta and spinach, the zing of lime and avocado, or the heat of cheddar and jalapeño, there’s a salmon burger variation to suit every palate.

The Base Recipe for Salmon Burgers

Before we get into the fillings, let’s start with the base:

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb fresh salmon fillet (skin removed)

  • 1 egg

  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (panko works best)

  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard

  • 1 clove garlic, minced

  • Zest of 1 lemon

  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

Chop the salmon into small pieces or pulse it in a food processor until it reaches a chunky consistency.

In a large bowl, combine the salmon, egg, breadcrumbs, mustard, garlic, lemon zest, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined.

Form the mixture into patties and chill them in the refrigerator for 20 minutes to firm up.

Cook the patties in a skillet over medium heat for 4–5 minutes per side or until golden brown.

Now, let’s elevate your salmon burgers with creative fillings!
